Benny Graham - Friday July 26th 2013 .

Benny served his musical apprenticeship in the folksong clubs of North East England. He has made a speciality of maritime songs and is well-known amongst canal enthusiasts for his repertoire of songs reflecting life and history of the canals.

There was no better place in the late 60's for a young singer to develop a love of the vast musical culture of the North East which takes in rural songs, Tyneside Music Hall and the music which grew from the heavy industries of coal, steel and ship building.

Alrewas Canal Festival celebrates the Canal & River Trust

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY - The Alrewas Canal & Music Festival Festival 2013 will run on the weekend of July 26-28th

After the success of the first Alrewas Canal & Music Festival in 2011, many people asked whether we would stage another in 2012.  One of the key reasons the 2011 Canal Festival was such a success was the help we received from the fantastic team of volunteers that stage the renowned Alrewas Arts Festival which runs every other year but and we didn’t want to clash with that or the long established Alrewas Show so we decided that Canal & Music Festival Mark II should be in 2013.

As a year, 2012 was remarkable in many ways – The Olympics, The Queens Jubilee and, in July 2012 – of huge importance to our waterways – the transformation of British Waterways into what is now one of the UK’s largest charities - The Canal & River Trust (CRT) - In 2013, we hope to feature the work of CRT.

crt_logo_croppedThe format for 2013 will build on that of 2011: In addition to Open Mic music featuring musicians from Staffordshire, we aim to feature a mixture of music genres that will appeal to most music fans and this year that will include canal folk music – more on that as the programme develops.  The bar in the main marquee will feature real ales from Burton Bridge Brewery at competitive prices.

The charitable aim is to raise money to support the repair of the Bailey Bridges that link the village with a variety of popular walks but we will also share proceeds with any groups that help to run supporting activities.

The Juke Joint Jammers - Saturday July 27th 2013 .

The Juke Joint Jammers bill themselves as covering Rock & Roll, Blues, Latin & Country and have also been known to dabble in the 50-60's art of skiffle.

But the bottom line is that fans of all ages remember them for the way that they perform their impressive repertoire whilst engaging the audience in a foot-tapping exercise that is never dull.
